Java ME (J2ME)

Java ME (earlier known as J2ME) is an interesting technology. It is one of the most widely implemented technologies in the world. More than 1 billion phones and devices around the world have Java ME in them. I have been developing on Java ME since 2002. Over the years I have seen the life cycle of Java ME. It has graduated from being just used for mobile games to being used for many business and consumer applications. Google for example has a Gmail client application available for various phones which has been developed using Java ME. Java ME has also added lot of APIs to it over the years.

When I first started development on Java ME in 2002 we could not show videos, listen audio and send SMS using Java ME. Even the Java ME phones were very expensive. I bought the first one for Rs. 21,250/- (more than USD 400). Now we have even Rs. 4500/- (approximately USD 100) have Java ME with more APIs then that old phone. These days we have APIs in Java ME for sending and receiving SMS, playing audio and video, vibrating the screen, getting access to the location information, displaying 3D content and lots more.

In OpenClass we strive to disseminate knowledge. Our aim is that knowledge should be free to the extent possible. As a first step I am making my book Mobile Phone Programming using Java ME (J2ME) which has been published by BPB Publications freely available for you all through this page. It contains lot of material for you people to learn. You can ask me questions on http://www.facebook.com/OpenClassWorld.
